my 318 makes a clacking sound around 2700 rpm on highyway the motor is tired but im trying to baby it until i can afford swap or rebuild as it is my daily driver i have played/messed with timing and motor seems to run fine to me but i am no expert it seem to crank well otherwords it fires right up it does smoke a little if i accelerate but i dont realy do a lot of that hard[ not yet] it also smokes a bit when firing up cold so where should a poor man put his cash first thanks

Since it is your daily driver. If you can find a core to rebuild I would start saving up money for the rebuild.

What does it do above 2700? Below? Do a compression check first to get some idea of the condition, if this checks out good, then check for other problems. If the compression is bad, you might as well look for something soon to replace it with. RPM related noises that are specific to only certain rpm's are sometimes hard to figure out because you are driiving while it is happening. Things that come to mind: harmonic dampner, valve springs or even heat riser valves can make noise in a narrow band of rpm. Usually things like rod bearings or mains or rockers will make noise at all rpms if they are bad.

At 2700 and up? Oil pressure gauge handy?

Could be pinging remove the vacuum advance hose plug it off and see if there is any difference. If you have to get another engine I would go with a 360.
