Alright so I recently installed hedman headers and exhaust pipes. So I had to remove the starter and the clutch linkage. After putting everything back together I noticed I get this rattling sound. I believe it makes it when pushing the clutch pedal or somehow just pressing down on the pedal. Not 100% sure what it is. So I recorded a video, it's hard to hear because the engine is running but I know you can hear it better towards the end if the video.

Or if anyone has any ideas?

I never get much out of these videos. Could be several things

For one, make sure the retainer is not broken. In my lifetime, I've broken about three.

Sorry bud, I do what I can with the videos.

Retainer? What retainer are you referring to? Thanks

The retainer on the front of the transmission, the tube on which the throwout bearing slides. They can break.

If you are talking about the kind of grinding, rattley sound near the end, it sounds kinda like your throwout bearing is going out on you or somehow having a problem rotating when it contacts the clutch fingers; it does not contact the clutch or rotate until you put some pressure on it which you are doing by resting your foot on or pushing in the clucth pedal.

It is almost certainly in the throwout bearing area. I have not had one of these particular models apart but sometimes clutch forks gets misalinged on the throwout bearing slot or surface on which it rides, and can cause problems. Ths might have gotten cocked or misaligned in the header install process.

Take off the boot and look, and make sure the fork is in right, but if there is nothing obvious there, I would pull the trannie and bell housing. The throwout bearing can already be seized and it will make exactly this kind of sound as it rubs against the clutch fingers rather than turning with the clutch when it makes contact.

The other Mark

Andre, you didn't have this before the header install?
Maybe it's just me but seems to be more noticeable when you relax the pedal?
Can you "feel it" in the pedal when it rattles?
What make of clutch components are you using, B&B?

Del, can one see the retainer tube just pulling the fork boot?

I know you didn't ask me, but yes you can see most of it if you get in there with a good flashlight.
Tha actual retainers are on the other side from you though.
Sounds like a dry throwout bearing to me.

Yes the issue was not there until I installed the headers. I felt it was the throwout bearing as well but its all new in there. I bought a clutch set at oreillys for like $100, came with clutch and throwout bearing.

In all honesty im not 100% sure when it does it. I dont recall feeling it in the pedal. I feel sometimes it does it when I press in the clutch or just at random.

I will do more detective work.

Been a very long time. Probably. Might need a mirror. Might need something to probe with. You need to get creative. Get a screwdriver, etc. Remove part of the linkage so you can "move things." Figure a way to SAFELY get under the car and listen, maybe using a length of hose held to your ear.

Stuff it could be in no particular order

Loose bell bolts

Loose transmission bolts

Broken clutch disc springs

general problems in the fork, IE off the pivot, broken pivot, bent, broken fork,

bad throwout bearing, noisy throwout bearing.

Problems in the PP. Broken release finger, broken spring in the PP, etc.

not enough free play. This is a problem with different clutch pressure plates and the under-dash return springs. You have to use your head

Does the clutch release and engage nice and smooth? Does it "speed shift" clean? Does it shift "easy" into reverse, without grinding?

Visually inspect........is the TO away from the clutch PP release fingers? This you should be able to see with the boot removed, again might need a mirror and a good light.

Also look for stuff rubbing on the linkage transferring sound

On that subject, do you have all the floor boots, etc installed? These cars "sound" incredibly noisy without the floor mats, boots, etc installed or with something rubbing that transfers sound from the engine / transmission to the body / frame.
