Hello fabo family

We just picked this cam and need to know if this will work with my stock push rods? I also got the matching valve springs. This is going into a small block 318. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do you realise that this cam will have a noticably rough idle & poor low rpm performance?

No I did not no about this cam. Bought it from a member here. Son is going to drive it to work and back every other day. Not a daily driver.

it's not ideal, but a lot of people run them and like them.

besides, it's not a daily so if you're just having fun with it then carry on.

It's something you won't know until you assemble it. It MAY be ground on a reduced base circle. If it is, you may need longer pushrods. You're just gonna have to see. As far as the other, that's a really rowdy cam for a 318. With stock highway gears and a stock converter, it'll be a dead pig.......but it'll sound nasty. lol

so, i did a little digging and nowhere in comp's literature does it mention or recommend pushrods. nor does summit or jegs in their suggestions or required parts-- which no surprise on that one. but for comp not to have word one about it was interesting.

naturally i fell down a wormhole only to read accounts of cams being ground on smaller base circles, but the eye opening part was telling of cams above 440 being subject to this. i mean, i expected much much larger would be as would pretty much any regrind.

anyway, from what limited research and perusal of items i was able to ascertain that it seems to be the "Mutha" and "Big Mutha" variants are likely to need longer pushrods. although this was reported on chevy motors, so it may not hold true for our vastly superior mopars.

so file it to: trust but verify.

also: that RRR for makin' me learn something today, ya jerkus.

If the overall plan is to just do a cam swap in an otherwise stock 318, in an unmodified car…….. imo, that’s a very poor choice of cam.

If the car has some mods done to it, let’s hear what they consist of to help determine if the mismatch is really as bad as it seems………or not.

The Base Circle diam is going to depend on the lobe lift. More lift, smaller BC. Starting with a new core as Comp would be doing, stock prods will probably work. If this cam was to be a re-grind, then the BC becomes smaller & longer prods might be needed.

Not a small base circle cam. I ran that in my sons ‘91 - W-150-4wheel drive truck. 4 spd manual-3.55’s on 28 inch tires. 10-1-360 engine with Edelbrock heads, RPM-600 AFB, headed-2-1/2 exhaust. Cam worked very well in the heavy truck.

It’s a bit large for a 318.
The Rhodes lifters would help a lot.
