I have CDA files on my hard drive that I would like to convert to MP3

and then put on my USB drive and play in my truck stereo.

can anyone recommend any free software that can convert the files?

I use a program called Free Audio Converter. Works great & is easy to use.
Get it here. [ame="http://download.cnet.com/Free-Audio-Converter/3000-2140_4-10893961.html"]Free Audio Converter - CNET Download.com[/ame]

You can do it with Windows media player.
Launch Windows Media Player. In the Tools menu, select "Options" and go to the Rip Music tab.

Click on the drop-down Format menu and select "MP3." Make sure "Rip CD automatically" is unchecked.

Choose a quality level by adjusting the Audio Quality slider. Lower quality is to the left, and higher quality is to the right.

Insert a CD into your computer. A track listing will appear automatically. Click on "Rip CD" to copy and convert all the tracks into the MP3 format. To rip individual tracks, uncheck the ones you don't want to copy before clicking on "Rip CD."

Watch out for that one listed above as it is very invasive.

This is what they say about it.

Pros
An astounding suite of first-rate freebies. Only if you pay will you find anything better. But it comes at a hidden price...
Cons
...and the hidden price is, it's extremely hard to avoid signing up for a truly hideous toolbar which draws you into the world of a spammer (scammer?) called Conduit. The jury is still out on whether Conduit (and the DVDsoft toolbar that manifests it) can be rated as malware, and I can't afford a libel suit: so dig deep into the internet coverage for yourselves. That's all I'll say; but be aware that even if the DVDSoft toolbar were the best thing since Jesus H Christ (and it ain't), it is EXTREMELY invasive and exceedingly difficult to remove - above all from Google Chrome, where it will also wreck all your personal settings.
Summary
Outstanding free software but be aware that it is not quite what it seems - and as the Russians say, "You only get free cheese in a rat trap." Never download with CHET's "smart install" and only download manually if you are vigilant to avoid its hidden extras at every turn: No, you do NOT want the DVDsoft toolbar and no, you do not want to download six times faster or eight times faster or...whatever. In fact the answer, and every option you'll be given is "No...no...no...no...no...no."

I like using the full audio editor Adobe Audition for all such tasks. Free downloads of older versions of AA are available all over the 'net. And it's typical Adobe software: you don't need the newest version. Unlike the "converter" programs, AA gives you complete control over the audio file, much like driving a stick compares to driving an automatic. There is a learning curve, but it's well worth it.
