Has anyone had a builder recently build a customer converter for a pre 67 a-904?

I tried Cope- nope
I tried Protorque- maybe.
Engine is done and cannot machine crank for it is already done and in the car. Machine shop did not want to cut crank as “converters are easy with small register.” Lol! Not so easy.
I am looking for a converter with the small 66’ front register (1.550”) and a rear pump drive for a larger pump 1974 a-904.
Stall needed. I can go 100% 66- 904a but it will have smaller input shaft and pump and nobody has converters for that - that I can find.

A friend of mine just completed a 64 Dart for Q stock automatic. He had A1 do his. He called all of the "conventional" shops, no bueno.

Give Sean a call at Dynamic Converters. When I was there discussing my A500 rebuild, they have racks upon racks of converters for cores

I had Pro Torque rest all the stock converter for my wife’s car since it has the older spline count. Excellent work.

I went to PTC for a converter. I filled out the spec sheet and talked to them on the phone.

They knew I was swapping in a 2001 5.9 Magnum with a 1966 A904. But what they sent was a 9.5" converter for a large input shaft of a newer 904. When I called, Kenny just said you should run a large shaft anyway.

So, I had to find a core and rebuild it. Left a bad taste for PTC.

So 66fyssh- I’m confused about your last post quoted above. I need the smaller 66 and older crankshaft nub, or register but want the larger input shaft set up from the 68’ and newer (larger input shaft, front pump) is that what you got?

I am contemplating rebuilding the factory 904 but then loose the ability for part throttle lock down from the newer (1974 904) transmission. Right now I cannot seem to get a “custom converter” shop to build anything other than a “off the shelf” converter. You figure if they make converters and are as most put it- “The Best” they would know how to make a converter with a front register that was custom sized. They tell me the register to fit an in molested 64-66’ crankshaft is “custom.” And they cannot do it. I’m very frustrated for sure.

thank you to everyone and your input on this. The search goes on! Somebody must be able to pull this off for me.

Milt at Precision of New Hampton in Iowa is worth a call.

thank you. I just checked their web page and 904 does not come up but I will call them when they wake up. I seem to be about 2 hrs ahead. Lol!

@Syleng1

My situation was the opposite of yours. I "thought " PTC was making me one with a larger snout for the 5.9 and a smaller input shaft but no. It was made for a larger input shaft and I didn't find out until it was all back together :BangHead:

Just wanted to let you know my experience with PTC. If you find someone that says they will do it, make certain, without question, they understand. Wish I would have done better.

Thank you for the advice! I will ask for a drawing if need be. Between part availability right now and competence right now- covid has definitely messed up the working world for sure.

So quick update:

After talking with a few converter experts that know MoPars from all over the country- I found out the reason no such converter is available is the diameter of the input shaft for the 68’ and up 27 spline 904 is too big for the inside converter bushing inside that nub (or register) so either the input shaft has to be machine down at the end or only a smaller input shaft from a 67 and older 18 spline can be used. The engine machine shop kinda screwed me with not doing as i asked and opening up that register at the back of the crankshaft when building the 273 in the name of strength. So the update is the original 66’ a-904 is being built at a local shop and they are going in and rebuilding the converter and changing the stall on the 66’ small nub converter. They have done a few transmissions for me and have a complete in house shop dedicated to just converter building. I was amazed when they showed me the converters they produce - I did not think such a shop was available on the East cost. And just 30mins up the highway for me. They did a 66re for me about 2 months ago and said “they rebuild converters in house” but had no idea the level available. They are also car guys and understood my situation.

So that in a nut shell is where I am at. If you have a small register or “nub” crank shaft you are limited to either machine it larger on the crank end OR you are stuck with major torque converter rework to make a auto work. As of this writing I could not find a company that makes a proper spacer to adapt down the nub of a 68’ and newer convert to a small nub 67’ and older crank with a bell housing spacer to allow for the needed extra room.

273= $$$$

Yep...either they could machine the register or they didn’t know how. They should have machined it. Just dumb.
