I am pulling the intake and heads off my 273. Should I be taking out the drain plugs in the block or should pulling the lower rad hose be good enough. I've never drained a block thru the plugs but Im told it;s a lot less mess. My car is already up on jack stands , ready to get-at-er.

Wally, with all the heads that we have pulled off small blocks, and all the anti-freeze we have had to clean out of piston bores, you should know that draining the block is the only way to do it.

Chance of 40something year old drain plugs coming out cleanly while the engine is still in the car is akin to the chances of letting my ex move in !!

Of course, miracles do happen.

I agree that draining the block would be the best way, but first draining the radiator itself, and pulling the lower rad hose will reduce the mess when you go for the blocks drain plugs. May take a couple minutes longer, but there will be less mess.

Mike,s right, pull the plugs or after drainign the rad jack the back of the car up/way up to let more drain.Pulling plugs will also make a mess.JMO.
