Ben Deutschman of the Slant Six Club of New York/New Jersey wrote that owners should be careful not to put on spark plugs with the "crush washer" (the loose metal washer at the end), but to take off the washer first, if they have a 1960-1974 engine. After 1974, the head was redesigned, the plug tubes were eliminated, and taper seat plugs were used. If you do have a 1974 or earlier slant six, be sure to replace the plug tube seals - they are cheap and easy to replace.

I read this at allpar http://www.allpar.com/slant6.html

and was wondering why you don't want to put on spark plugs with crush washers?

The washer may not let the plug go far enough in to reach the valve chamber.
or the washer may go through the tube and fall in the motor.

Just a thought after reading the page.

ok, that makes sense I guess. I have the washers on mine, but I made sure they were big enough to not fall through the hole

Allpar is wrong 60-62 You use the crush washers. 63-74 (with plug tubes) you DO NOT USE THE WASHERS. It keeps the plug to far out of the chamber. It can cause all sorts of problems from over heating to poor preformance.
