Like some in the US and Canada, my first car was an air-cooled VW. I went on into my 30's to have owned more than 10, all of them daily drivers.
I remember VW and many other European builders having a wood-slatted roof as an option, given that their trunks were so small to begin with. While period accessory suppliers must have offered a "universal" rack for our unusual roof lines, I couldn't find any trace of a custom-fit one having existed at anytime, anywhere.
I've always loved the contrast of materials and tones so I built my own for the 61 Lancer.
A513 16 GA tubing OnlineMetals.com: ~$150.
20 feet of 1/4" pine: $10
PlastiDip for the cleats and hold-downs: $6
misc hardware: $10
doing it with your son: priceless.....
Thanks from NC.
