D%#N Super Bees

Those are Yellow Jacket Wasps. Nasty critters. Yellow jacket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

6 stings can cause a severe anaphylactic reaction up to 24 hours later. If you notice swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, dizziness etc. get to the Emergency Room IMMEDIATELY!

Anaphylactic reactions can result in death within minutes of onset. Do not hesitate if you even remotely think one is occurring.
Been there done that a few years ago. yellow jackets from a ground nest I ran over with riding mower. 6 hits, arms legs, back and lip. Hour later I was in ER when I realized my throat was swelling shut. I'm not 'alergic' and can normally take 1-2 stings with little consequence.

Wasps. For some reason they're thick in Colorado this year. The foam wasp spray is awesome. It immobilizes them on contact and you can stand there safely and watch those little bastards die. I keep about half a dozen cans scattered around the place. I keep it by all the cars I don't drive, by the shops and out buildings. I also keep a good supply of Benadryl. Keep it in the house and keep it in your glove box too.

I am not swollen too bad on the stings but I think I have a fever. Hopefully I don't croak over but I got out of bed and it feels dang cold .....I am shivering and I don't think that is normal.

Wowsers,Rani...The last three months: Had Raccoons,Skunks,,in the back yard, had possum,in the house... sparrows in the house,a monthly thing.. Bee's ? Not lately, thank the man upstairs.

I'm pretty sure you need to destroy any trace of the honeycombs too or they will return...:elmer:

Nasty bugs for sure!!

You have to destroy the nest also...

There may be young ones that may hatch later...

You must have a tendency to be allergic, 6 hits should not phase someone if not allergic.

I stepped on a hollow log (didn't look hollow) about 40 years ago, and it was full of yellow jackets. Needless to say I got stung somewhere between 150 to 200 times, before I could get away from them.

My friends that were with me quite counting at that point. I sat on a tree stump in my living room leaned up against the wall for about 24 hours before I could function again. Got stung so many times in one eye that it looked like someone put an egg under my eyelid.

True story!

that's just karma for not driving your cars often enough to keep them from nesting in there
I have an old black GMC truck I use for plowing snow - it sits ALL summer long.. it's always a nervous time when I need to get it running again and all...

Your not human. LOL
I guess most people react at some level. I think you are one of very few to have that high of tolerance. Of course , 40 years ago people didn't go to the ER as quickly as they do today. I was 'fully functional', just a bit worried when I took a drink of water and it did not go down. By that point the actual stings were looking better and I was just gonna 'sleep it off'. The doc said I was not a concern with regard to needing epipen or even close. If I had been stung in one area they said I prob would have had much less reaction, but with them spread around like that my whole system got it at once.

..You had a tree stump in your living room?

The foam spray I mentioned will render the nest uninhabitable. It will soak and kill. Especially the paper wasps. They will not return to that nest either.

Lot of people are. I get hit three or four times a year and I don't do well. Last time my elbow looked like a football. A little Benadryl and about an hour I was back to normal. Some people do worse where they require an Epi Pen in order to stay alive. You know? The one that just went from fifty bucks to six hundred for no reason. I'll be happy to discuss that with you in another forum.

Yeah, I had my Wife call the hospital and they told her to keep a close eye on me and what to look for. It just rendered me near unconscious for about 24 hrs, just sipped a little water and that was about it. Two days later I looked like a 6'2" 190 pound cheesepuff with a beer in my hand.

Why yes, doesn't everybody? lmao! Yeah, I had a couple cool looking stumps that were cleaned up and covered in shellac. They made for a good sitting post once in a while, kinda like sitting around the campfire without the campfire. :D

a few weeks later and the stings didn't phase me as bad as I thought they would ...

I had to go through last night with a 6 pack of wasp killer spray and I killed 17 nests all in my cars. I got under each car at night and cleaned them out.

the seam between the fender and door seem to be a popular bee favorite.

I am waiting for the nests to dry out so I can burn them now.

Its a good thing yellow jackets do not take flight at night and they are probably blinded by the flashlight. I don't think they can see in the dark.

IDK.
They look different than the Yellow Jackets common here.

Since yours were so far above ground I'm going with "hornet".
I'm not an entomologist but yours look bigger.
Our Yellow Jackets are smallish.
These are pictures of the first Yellow Jackets I had ever seen that were actually above ground here. But the cross ties I found the nest in were in contact with the ground.
So that may count.
Even in the nest there were two different looking types. Large and smaller.
I'm well acquainted with "our" Yellow Jackets and I had never seen the larger ones found in this nest.
And since all Yellow Jacket nest I had seen were in the ground I was surprised at the "paper wasp" nesting.

Me don`t like bugs either. wasp, yellow jackets, bumble bees, hornets-hell no. spiders, stinging scorpians, snakes, the only good ones are dead ones. w/ exception of black snakes that eat rats. a 9 ft plus, one of them gives me the berries too!

last time I got stung, it went down my shirt. bit just once, I didn't bother to ask which species it was! ha........red wasps seem to be the bug of favor here. mean suckers too! less I go thru 6-8 cans of that foam long shooting wasp spray every summer. I don't all of them either.

was mowing the lawn one year, and around an old clothes line pole that is gone now. when I bumped it w/ the mower, a few yellow jackets came out of the top cross pipe, one of them nailed me. the wind was blowing pretty darn hard, I grabbed a can of blue spry paint and sprayed it in the south end, the wind blew it all the way threw the 2" pipe, was funny to see all the blue bees dropping out the other end! I spray the whole lawn every yr. now, haven`t seen too many of anything lately.

I have used the (Great Stuff) foam in a can to plug some places like pipes where they build nests. After its dry , trim if needed and wipe some silicon sealer on it . It will last quite a while that way.
