I`m about to install the dipstick tube into the block (440) and I`d like to know what is the best method? It has a bracket attached to it so I can`t slide anything over the tube. Last one I installed I just put an open end wrench around the tube right at the lip ,and pounded it in with a hammer. There must be something better? Any suggestions? Thanks.

What i do is open the hole in the block slightly so there is still a very light press fit. Then I put a thin oring on the end of the tube. If I ever have to remove it, a slight twist and upward pull and its out.

Thanks dusterdon, I thought about opening it up some but decided against it. The o-ring is a good modern touch, (I may use that). I talked to an old mechanic friend of mine today and he suggested putting the tube in the freezer for a night. Just before I`m ready to install the tube ,heat the area on the block with a heat gun, pull the tube from the freezer, and as fast as possible drive the tube in. This is the old-timers method and supposed to work. Last time I installed one I got it in by just hammering it in. It was ugly by the time I got it bottomed out and I thought it would probably leak but it didn`t. I wonder how the factory did it, you can`t even see a mark on the tubes where they installed them?

the factory did the hot cold thing. i am sorry longgone i was a jerk this morning buy posting that. i was having a pretty bad day i guess i should have gone home and got my car out and ruined a set of new tires instead
