Okay - I am able to set my timing at 35 degrees total but the distributor's vacuum adv is touching against the coil, with no more timing adjustment available. I want to move the distributor gear one or two teeth so that I move the distributors body clockwise away from the coil so the distributor is not touching the coils case.

If I am thinking about this correctly then I think I should pull the dist gear up part way and turn it counterclockwise in order to make this change, right ?

If the coil is in front of the dist and you are trying to advance the timing by moving the dist. counterclock wise then the shaft needs to be turned clockwise a tooth or two.

Just clock all the wires over one position on the cap. That will give you some adjustment in the distributor.

Yup. I had to relocate the wires on a VW beetle I had cause the wire into the bottom of dist. grounded to the clamp (block or something, long time ago).

Move wires or the gear 1 tooth counter should do it.

Take out the distributor, get a long screwdriver and turn the drive opposite of normal rotation. It will raise up about 1/2". You'll be able to feel two teeth pretty easily. Really a simple job. If you mark where your distributor was originally your timing should remain close.
