I have a metal gasket that came in the engine gasket set. It is the same size as the distributor base. Did the 72 318 use a gasket and o-ring. This one from Victor is v shaped. So if it is used, does it matter if it is V or ^ ? Also what is the 3 1/2 inch felt gasket for?

..............The tin gasket is used when ur dist doesnt have an 0 ring... 68 or 9 and older kim........dont know about the felt.......

A '72 distributor should have an "O" ring type seal. The metal ring is not needed with that setup. The felt gasket is probably for the early A engine that used one as the balancer seal. Use a good quality rubber one instead.

The felt goes in the timing cover, right behind the press-in seal, held there by the oil slinger.
