Do I need a stall converter?

-
I am running the exact same cam in my 360/727, but with 1.6 rockers, 400+ HP. I am not sure if you need one, I suspect it would be better if you did. I am running a 2800 stall TCI convertor in my setup.

Depends on the displacement of your motor, what kind of performance you want, A/C or not, etc. If the cam is in a 340 (based on your sig), running a dual plane intake and vacuum secondary carb, no A/C, then probably not. However, single plane intake, double pumper carb, etc. then maybe. Either way, you'd have much better acceleration using a 2500 stall converter. I'm finishing up a 318 with the same size cam and have a 2500 stall in mine.

If you want a cheap stall converter us a /6 converter it will stall more behind your V8 than a V8 converter will.

Absolutely! ALL converters stall. The real question is... at what stall RPM will your engine/chassis combo work best? The right torque converter can make a car, the wrong one can turn it into a dawg! And there is more to torque converters than just the stall speed. Namely torque multiplication and efficiency. If you are going to deviate from stock, I suggest you talk to several torque converter manufacturers and get their recommendations. Their info is free, so why not? Then you can make an intelligent decision based on your combo, intended usage and budget.

your camshaft manufacture company is also a good place to ask if you need a higher stall converter. have all car info ready when you call, weight, tire size, rear gears, motor specs etc.
