I just ran an errand for a friend, dropping his driveline off to be shortened for his 72 Charger. Turns out, the spec he gave me came out of a chassis/parts manual, off the net. Are those specs given the center-to-center length, or (??) Thats the only shaft measurement Ive ever worked with, but it just occured to me that I'm not positive thats what factory books use. I assumed it was, but we all know about assuming... The shop likely won't get to it til mid next week, so I'm gonna have him do an actual measurement this weekend so that we don't have an "ooops" anyway, but I'm still curious...

Why not ask the shop how they want you to measure it? Your going to get a ton of answers here on this one.

It's not the shop or communicating with them that's an issue. Sorry, my first post wasnt really clear.. My question is if the numbers given in the Factory parts/chassis manual is an overall length, center-to-center measurement, or some other nebulous choice, like tailshaft seal lip to rear u-joint center...???

the FSM gives it as center to center

however, i don't know how you're going to measure it to double check without a yoke in the trans? i mean, unless you have a spare. and remember to have all 4 wheels down with the weight of the vehicle on 'em when you measure.

the one thing i've learned in all my time dealing with driveshaft shops is always ask how they want the measurement.
