Drum brake question...

Just bought this 1970 Swinger. Checked the front (drum) brakes today and the linings are cracked. Any idea waht causes this? Did they overheat at some point? Very old parts?

Most of the time this is from generating to much heat, but this was a common thing on Drum brake cars. and I'm sure age didn't help matters.

Mine cracked because the dumbass mechanic(me) forgot to adjust them and the were slapping the drum.](*,)
