Is the bell housing different from a 3 speed to a 4 speed?

Usually not; look at it, see if it has 8 threaded holes.

Mine was different. "68 170 three on the tree.

Yes, 3 and 4 speed use different bolt patterns. Some bell housing will have both bolt patterns on them others only have one bolt pattern.
