If i build a car to sell, there needs to be a budget to make it profitable. buddy wanted to get into flipping cars.told him flat out if im not getting my shop rate im not doing it. I would be a fool to give up my shop rate so he can play the game. I do all the work,sell parts at cost.ya, no.

So these shops getting exorbitant amounts of money to build cars, and then the owner sells for a loss,its the owner’s problem.
I watched kindig build an incredible 70 ish chevy 1/2 ton. It was over the top,and i can only imagine the price tag. But i think there was an endless budget and they were given free reign.

The only thing I never understood was how someone that dumb got all that cash
 
just another car built by non mopar people, that uses a bunch of parts from the top of cool kids magazine lists, with no thought given to what the end game was or what it cost

That's right. You don't have to be smart about everything, you just have to be smart at one thing.... then you get to spend dumb money.

We like to build trophy cars......... no, not cars that are numbers matching, but cars that people give up on, for pennies on the dollar. Bought our '69 Dart for $1100, dropped in a 440/727 that we got for $200, local reupholster, 2 sheets of 18 gage steel, lime green paint. The trophy is when the previous owner sees his car ha ha and what he could have done. Not for sale.
 
Money is paper with green ink on it it isnt about smart or dumb, most rich folks screwed someone over at some point... making money honestly is the hard part...that's what most cant seem to do. Im not impressed by money if someone is a dumbas they are a dumbass, most posers have everything they own on credit anywayze...

It's really easy to get over $100,000 in parts alone. They added in labor to reach that value, and it's reasonable. If you pay someone to build a really nice car it's going to take a long time and cost a lot of money. I couldn't have afforded my car if I hadn't done the work myself, but it took me 10 years.

There's a huge cost difference between building a car back to like it originally was and building a custom car that looks like an old car.
 
I quit recording how much I spent on my resto early on... I do know a deal when I see one and don't expect things cheap or free... I saw a 74 Duster recently on CL im my area for 7500 bucks, the car looked painted and runs and drives and interior good. By the time I started pitching it to the wife it was gone. ast thing I said was" Finding one like that for under 10 grand is a buy" It had A 318 IN IT BUT IF i PICKED ITT UP ID SWAP IN A 340.
 
I spent 30K and 27 years restoring a 65 valiant convertible doing everything myself. What you think I would get if I sold that? At least it wasn't 256K
 
I remember when I was transporting vintage Ferraris to auctions back in the early 90's.

Some of these cars were bought for upwards of $1,000,000 and got resold for $300,000. Just about killed some of the owners.

I shipped a '63 Ferrari GTO thru Pan Am airlines at JFK around 1989-ish. My brother owned it and he sent it to Geneva, Switzerland to try to save his *** as the Europeans had a little more $$$ back then and the Italians were buying their cars back. Not sure hebroke even with the duties and transport... it was $7,000 to ship it via air.
 
I told my aunt last year "yeah I just saved it from the junkyard is all..." selling it for a return isn't even on my mind.
 
Maybe I'm missing something here. Most people who spend the crazy money, have the crazy money to spend, mostly because they are smart in making money, to work for them. Being these projects are one of a kind, who is to say, what is is worth, as in a tax right-off, for their business. Truly Nolen bought many antique autos through the years and placed the cars on street corners for advertisement. A $250,000 Duster, I may want to take a look at. One day they may want to sale it and get maybe $40,000 for it and still had the advantage of a Tax right-off. As a hobbyist, it's at a lost, being a different Ball Game.
 
I would think if a guy has a quarter of a million to spend on a car, he probably not that worried about making a profit?
 
I've sunk quite a bit into my '66 Barracuda (now resto-mod) but my son fell in love with it, so when I'm done driving it I don't have to worry about selling it at a loss - he's moved to Florida, he can drive it down there for another 30 years

some want to break even. But they rarely do.

I have heard of one guy that was disappointed when he sold his fairly well known pro touring Mopars years ago. Maybe market little stronger in those car now. But build cost are higher too.
 
Yes on the costs... keep in mind even buying parts on line, the shipping charges can be up to 40% of what you paid for the part, then factor in delays I waited from March to late Sept for my upholstery from Legendary. If I was in business do I tell my customer "your interior will be in in 6 months..."

I just dumped 500.00 last week at the Beach to catch a fish I had to throw back lol. I think my actions are far worse than someone sinking too much into a hotrod.... Atleast their car can't swim away...

People who spend that much on a car aren't really worried about the amount. They want what they want and have positioned themselves in life to do so. It actually gives someone with less financial horsepower to get a deal at someone's loss....

Best deals are the unfinished projects however I find i dont have time to wrench cars back together etc.etc. there is always something missing even if they say "its all there..." LOL!
