Why did you weld the bearing on?Also I thought this was a rare 76 360 car?If so,your car just de-preaciated doing the rear swap!Oh well it,s for the better!I,m in need of 1 axel from 8 1/4.

helloooo !! yes indeed .. its a rare car lol , but i had to did it for my magnum crate engine , i could keep the other one and modify it but with a lot of $$$$$, so thats the cheapest and easy way !

its gonna be 80 % factory stock looking car but .. i have to keep up with the upgrades if i want to run into the 11-12s next year !

oh btw .. if we welded the bearing to the axle, its cause if one day something breaks it gonna gonna pop up like popcorn !!! it will stay in place, its a tip from my good friend who had a pro street 71 demon in the low 11 sec range ,, cannot refuse is help !

I don,t think you,ll be brakeing an axel or bearing, are they Moser axels?Crate engines HP?Welding on bearings isn,t a good idea.I would have had the orignal motor redone,I think it would have been better than a crate motor. My 2 cents. My 340 was stroked to 372 and was dynoed at 452hp.Believe me,it was alot cheaper than buying a 425hp crate motor!

i understand you verry well , yes they are moser axles ... and my engine is a 390 hp magnum crate engine , dyno tested at 410 hp and 440 lbs of torque , i never had the chance to own the original engine .. when i bougth the car it was a 360 from a corboda or something .. and just for fun i payd my engine 3 k ( complete w/everything even msd distributor ) and the guy who bougth it from the usa few years ago payd like nearly 10 k for it , and took it only few times on the road when it was in is 71 cuda , so i dont think that its a bad thing to keep the correct cubic inch and having like 400 hp lol ! i like the fact that i still have a 360 , but its sure that i love strokers , but for my budget it was the best deal and i knew the guy since im 16 , im now 23 .

Sorry, you didn,t mention a used crate motor. So yes that is a good deal, still don,t understand why you would tack bearings on new axels?

Those bearings are pressed on the axle shaft and then retained with that pressed collar, on the other end the retaining plate bolts to the housing and keeps the bearing from coming out. Welding on heat treated material like that axle is not good. It's already been heated to treat it, now that you super heated a small area by welding on it you may induce small crystaline fractures into the metal because now it's been overheated. So you may indeed break an axle when if you had left it alone you wouldn't have.

Just because someone had an 11 sec pro street car that doesn't make them an engineer or a metallurgist.

Isnt that the outer race of the ball bearing that has to be able to spin independant of the axle shaft itself? I must be missing something here, or is that a pressed on retainer for the bearing????

That is a pressed on retainer. The bearing is pressed on and so is the retainer. Just try to press them both off together and see what happens. A 10 ton press can't do it. You have to cold chisel the retainer off first (don't want to heat the axle) and then press the bearing off. Since there really are no in and out loads on an axle shaft like that there is no way it's coming out of there.

anyway ill take is tip , if its breaks ill let you know ... until then he raced a lot , did a lot of highway cruise and in 11 years he never had a problem with is demon , its not just him .. theres a lot of people that i know here in quebec who race with this set-up , to 13 sec cars to 10 secs..

if its that bad it would be my problem , im not savying that my axle is better than anybodies here .. never mentioned that .. im taking this guys experiences .. heres in the a-bodie cars since 1980 .. an hes a machinist , port heads , rebuilt engines , modifies a lot of motors ... the guy does this since 21 years for a living , hes a professionnal , i prefer that its a friend of mine who does a mistake if its really one , that a nobody in a garage that does it to my car .. im not talking of you .. but if the guy did it .. its cause he already did it on is cars , and more experimented racers did it too .. im not scared at all even if they have a 500 $ (canadian ) value ..

i trust him .. my 2 cents

I'm 52 years old, have worked as a Chrysler tech since I got out of high school and I've been racing just as long. I've never seen an 8.75 or a Dana axle (which is the same BTW) ever have a bearing come off the shaft. Even if you didn't weaken it it's just not necessary to do. It's not going anywhere.

But now if it does break Moser won't warranty it nor would Strange, Mark Williams, or any other axle manufacturer. Tell your friends to stop welding their axles too. Because friends don't let friends weld their axles. :)
