I picked up an 833 from a fellow FABO member

I was looking over the ID number but didn't see a raised plate like the later 4 speeds have is this common? I think this is an 64-65 unit so I do not know if they were marked differently

Numbers i found were

Tail shaft - C-95658-G

Main Cover C-95664 J

Pass side Body C-95639 U

Can anyone decode for me?

Brad

I have no idea what those numbers mean, but if it's a 64-65 it must have the ball 'n trunion flange for the driveshaft.
If it has a slip yoke it's a 66 up

here are a few one is a bit blurry

well I knew that I was just wondering about the number before because it is not stamped the way later 833s are.

since it has the a-body tailshaft there's a good chance it has the short 3.09 first.

It's easy to check. Just put it in first (that's the rear shift-fork point on the side cover, and turn that clockwise). Then turn the input shaft until the output shaft has made one complete revolution, and count how many times you've had to turn the input shaft.
If that's little over 3 turns you've got the 3.09 first. If it has turned about 2,5 times it's the 2.66 first.

Love all the spinning wheels.
Easy answer since its a ball and trunion, It WILL be a 64-5, the casting numbers wont be needed. the raised pads dont come in till 68. Plus the gear ratio is 'marked' on the imput shaft in front of the splines, and I can see it is a 3.09 gear trans.
Now switch all the gears into a 66 up trans and use a slip yoke and get 3.9 gears on a 3.55 rear end.

Just curious, how can you tell by looking at the input shaft that it has the 3.09 first?

Hey guys. I have a few questions myself, I’m trying to identify it. I have a 68 Barracuda and so I need to know if the one I’m looking to buy is for an A body before I buy it. Let me attach some pictures.
Numbers I see are C 95638 U
And on the other side I was told the numbers are 95838 or 95839 U

If any one can help me decode or identify that would be great.

The way I understand it would look like you have a 66 transmission there A body. There's no ID pad on the passenger side case. I believe the ID pad came in in 67 but was not punched with digits until 68. Mine is similar. A '66 although it was B body and I put the a body tail shaft on. I also have another one or two around here somewhere

Not being an ***.....I'm an *** anyway, but if you create your own thread with your question, you will generate much more attention and get many more answers.

Is there a difference between a 64-65 a833 manual a body trans and a 70-71 ? Is one better than the other? Or what are the differences?
the 64-65 have the Ball and trunion the 66 is a slip yoke they have a 3.09 first gear which will fry the tires easy the later 4 speed have a 2.66 first really weak take off compared to the 3.09.

1964 thru midyear 1966 A-body 3.09:1 - 1.92:1 - 1.40:1 - 1:1
67 and up 2.66:1 - 1.91:1 - 1.39:1 - 1:1

As long as you have the ball and trunion drive shaft just run it those are strong transmisson PERIOD

So pretty much the only difference is the first gear? So the 64-65 years are better since they have more power in that 1st gear.

No. They are very arguably stronger than their later model slip yoke counterparts. Remember, they held the horse power if the Max Wedges AND the 64 Race Hemis, so they are FAR from weak.

Ok noted. And I’ll make sure to start my own thread next time. I’m new to this so I haven’t even looked into how to do that. Anyway, thanks for your response. I appreciate it.

Hay no problem. I was just giving you the best advice to get the most responses. I will be looking for your new thread!

No problem. I didn’t take offense to it. You’re right I should’ve started a new thread. I needed a quick answer. I’m gonna check out a rebuilt a833 tomorrow built in 11/1970 and the guy is selling for $1000 and then there’s another guy selling his 64-65 a833 not rebuilt, looks like it needs work, probably sand blasted and rebuilt completely but he’s selling for $100. I don’t mind having to rebuild it. I more so wanted to know which was my better option.
