Hey all I have an issue that I wondering if any one else has run into this. I installed a set of eddy 60779 heads on my stroker 408 small block this winter and when I went to start it up it sounded like a sewing machine. It is a 1975 block it came out of a van I'm running a comp cam XE268H. Edelbrock claims that you should be able to run with the stock stamped steel rocker arm assembly and push rods so, is this true or do I have to invest in a after market rocker arm assembly with ajustable push rods? The sound really didn't sound like a clapping noise from a loose rocker arm it sounded more just like a sewing machine running. The question that I'm asking is how do you check your preload on the lifters or how do know if you need a longer push rod or not or even if the push rod is to long? As you can tell i'm very lost and frustraited right now and don't know which direction to go. I didn't let the motor run very long for fear of hurting something. Have any of you done this combination before and resolved the problem?

I ran stock rockers with eddy heads with a hughes 230/237 @.050 hydraulic cam with .515/.535 lift.

I run comp pro mags on my eddy heads (they were on the x heads but now on eddy)

Chances are you simply have a preload issue as you think you do. It's not reserved for one type of block or head. It's more a combination of a bunch of things. The only way to get proper preload on any engine is after the longblock's together, you need to check it. Preload is the amount of distance the plunger in the lifter is pushed down away from the bottom of the plunger retaining clip. For most cams, and for the XE268 using the std type (822-16) lifters, you will want to have somewhere around .030-.040 of lifter preload. You should be able to go as far as .050 without problems. Anything under .025 or so might be loud. If you have the anti-pump-up lifter (867-16) then you will need adustable rockers because they are designed for much less preload and you'll need the adjuster to get it "just right". They will also be more noisey even when you get them perfect.

Remember , an alum head grows much more than an iron head when warm. Preload needs to be adjusted accordingly. As far as aftermarket rockers on eddies, I'd say stay away from Crane Golds. Besides the broken adjuster syndrome, the geometry is not quite right. Comp Pro Magnums are one of the good choices.

My Comp pro mag's sound like a sewing machine as yours does. Many have said thats what they will sound like. Here are the responses I got regarding the same question. Hope you guys don't mind me quoting you here from my post. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=130522

"The rockers should sound like a sewing machine" POS Dakota "looks good! sounds good! yep, sewing machine rockers! love it." mopardude318 "Comp's technical support department had me set the lifters at 40 thousanths and it also sounds like a sewing machine" superchargeddrt
