I pulled the gas tank on my '74 Duster and while I was at it I decided to fix some problems with the trunk. I pulled the back bumper off and the "EAU" off of the bumper. I am tempted to sand blast them, paint them and re-use them but... I don't know if there is a better way, I was wondering if anyone has replaced them with something else? Do you re-use them like I had intended?

Help me out!

Thanks!

Are we talking those black, shock absorber looking things? Have a big square plate on each end? This may be apples to oranges, but I took the ones off my '77 Roadrunner (Volare), cut the plates off, cut a piece of 2 1/2" thick wall tubing to length, and welded everything together. Bolted the bumper back on and drove it. The tubing was a lot cheaper than a replacement and I didn't want to waste any more money than I had to to fix what the mouth breathing idiot who hit me in the rear did to the car. And yeah, they had no insurance to boot.
Found out later that those struts could be plumbed invisibly and held enough nitrous to make a difference when you needed it.

If you want, you could try blasting and painting. Can't see why it wouldn't work if you're really careful with the blast nozzle in the area where the two tubes overlap.
