what oil are you guys using on an 6.1? 5w40, 0w40?

With a Milodon pan do I need exactly 7 quarts (plus oil filter capacity)?

I need to calibrate my dip stick.

Thanks, Michael

Not sure about the 6.1, but I believe the 5.7 calls for 5w20. If the 6.1 is the same I really wouldn't run thicker... I would be worried about improper/poor lubrication, as well as power loss from thicker oil.

I think i remember that the capacity of the milodon pan is less than factory for clearance. I don't remember specifically, so it may be worth a call to them...

yeah I run 5w-20 in my 5.7 hemi but I am pretty sure thats because of the mds, you dont have that in your 6.1 but I am pretty sure lighter weight oil is the way to go in the newer engines, I could be wrong, My stock 5.7 holds 7 quarts with filter. I run Durablend Valvoline 5w-20. fyi

The Factory Service manual states that the 6.1 Hemi requires 0-40 SYNTHETIC, the specifically mention Mobil 1.

Here's the quote.

NOTE: For 6.1L only Use API rated SL/CF full synthetic engine oil, such as Mobil 1. SAE 0W-40 is recommended. Refer to the engine oil viscosity chart for the correct SAE grade meeting DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-10725.
