"EQ" Magnum cylinder head differences

It seems there has been a lot of confusion in the last while about the "EQ" smallblock replacement magnum heads. The GOOD castings, which are no longer available are quite easily distinguishable from the later chinese versions, I'll show a few pictures to help anyone out that might be looking at a used set, or a nos set of castings and not sure the difference. There is a SIGNIFICANT difference in out of the box capability also. This first pic is the good castings, although these are LA intake pattern

This is the typical currently available Chinese head, regardless of who you buy them from, they appear to be the same thing as the jegs,speedmaster,and house brand heads. Very different look, especially at the accessory mounting points. Also come with a horrendous valve job, and would take significant portwork to even come close to the earlier "EQs"

It looks like it's pretty easy to spot the machining on the ends of the heads. Good EQ heads have way more meat for machining than the Chink heads. Sorry, I have a problem with so many of our items being made in China! They are NOT our allies & almost everything we get from there is JUNK.

Both ends look the same, the difference is extremely clear. But I can definitely take a exact same angle shot if it would help.
 
Ever flow one of the Chinese ones with stock valves and the as delivered valve job?
I haven't personally, but I may just do that, however I have no flow data from my personal bench to compare to.

Dig out the vj with some stones and just lightly blend the far side bowl. 245-250 cfm

Both ends are the same then it's obvious. Great awareness pictures as I haven't owned either replacement heads.
 
Yes , looks like some are trying to trade theirs or sell em...nothing at all like the
New Zealand ones....quality never sticks around...

The savings for most is gone.
It's the extra work that can make them impractical if you can't do at least half of it yourself.
 
I do know for a fact that there were a handful of New Zealand based EQ heads that looked identical to the Chinese casting. I have only seen about 3 said pairs of heads though. 2 online, 1 in person
 
They flow like utter **** till .400 and then they're still not impressive in terms of high flow/ performance.
45 cfm @.100 says enough.
170 cc intake runner. They are still good enough to be EXTREMELY competitive in IMCA Stock car oval track racing. Watch this video at 2:50 seconds in. Devin Smith ran Mopar before the neutering rules and his sponsors made him change to Chevy and watch how he walks away every time even after restarts. He is who I bought my set of EQ heads from and the last Mopar he ran was a Chinese EQ-headed Magnum 360 and he dominated, he even winds it to 7,500 rpm and bounces off the chip. CC size isn't the only role in a performance engine. Get a camshaft tailored properly and you have port velocity-based performance.

I'm not referencing the eq box version, I'm speaking for the speed master magnum box version mentioned.
They are 150cc.
 
I’m waiting on a PM to appear one day where someone I know just a wee little bit finally says,
“I got them Magnum R/T heads you wanted!”
