Years ago, I read in some magazine's "tech tips" type article about how you could drive nails into new rubber suspension bushings (before installing) to make them stiffer. This was before the advent of the poly stuff that I don't hear the best things about. Being a magazine article, I tend not to believe it will work, but it sounds good.
Anyone ever tried this or something similiar?

Never tried it, but I do remember reading that same tip.

I had never heard of inserting them before installation, but the basic idea was to 'preload' the bushing, tricking it into behaving like a higher durometer material. The obvious drawback was your were pre-damaging the bushing, accelerating failure, and it was not possible to increase the resistance uniformly. But done as effectively as possible, it would produce a noticable change.
