I think I would have made up a section of 1 ga welding lead with eyelets on the ends. I'm sure what he did was sufficient. GM could still use those braided ground straps even in the salt belt, if they'd get them insulated dipped.
 
The braided ground between the engine and firewall of my 2000 Dakota failed last year causing a no start condition.
It looked good, but obviously wasn't. I felt the attachment point on the back of the head, and that seemed good, too.
Not sure what the problem actually was other than block not grounded to firewall.

I used a battery cable that had bolt through ends on both sides (like a ford cable to the relay).
Ironically, I had just found that cable laying in the road a few weeks before that, and it happened to be almost the exact length I needed.
Instead of fiddling with the back of the head mount, I simply attached it to the top of the compressor where the ground from the battery is.
