I don't ever remember using these parts with a 383 rear seal kit. What are these used for?

Do you guys use rtv in the groves of the retainer plate on the side seals?

I use them.
I rtv them too.
Used to be composite like side wedges you would rtv up and slide in the side as you I stalled the seal cap
Those top in the pic, theyre locators , right?
Keeps the seal lips lined up so it doesn't leak

I don't think I have ever used the parts in the picture. So these parts are not suppose to be installed? Fel Pro instructions are poor. I am replacing it while the engine is in the car.So much easier with the engine out ...lol
Actually so much easier with the oil pan off.

Yes, the walls on the rear seals and corners should get a thin coat of RTV. 65'
The mystery pieces included in your rear main seal package are in there because that seal kit not only fits a big block but also fits a slant six! That's where the extra parts get used.
