Hi Folks

No, this won't turn into a for sale thread. A local family member has a 1970 340 forged steel crank in nice clean condition (std rods and .010 mains from the factory) but will need a trip to the machine shop for grinding prior to installation. I'm not looking to steal it, I just want a fair deal for both of us.

How much should I pay?

Thanks FABO

You won't know what its worth until you get it magnafluxed and checked at a machine shop. $50 as is no returns. You take the loss if its bad. Scrap its worth $5.00 in weight. I scrap cranks from my sons shop monthly. so you lose $45 if its bad and gain $150 if its good. Due to what you'll have in it at the shop. I new crank is $500.00 through A-tech motor sports if you have a commercial account with summit. And some kits come with the bearings as a rotating assembly for a little more cash. drop right in.

I gave $75 for the last one I bought. It was good but needed ground and polished. 65'

I would have thought they would be worth a bit more since prices on everything else these days seems to be twice as high as they were just a year or so ago....

What are you using it for? It's already 10 under how far will it take to get right

They're available new, so that doesn't do used prices any favors.

340 cranks have the rod journals drilled for the heavier rods.
I didn't know there was a difference in the crank for the different factory rods among the years of a forged crank 340. .and didn't the 318s run the exact same rods in a given year as the 340s anyway?
I would think a forged crank from a 318 would be the exact same part as a forged crank from a340

340 cranks have a 1 inch hole drilled through rod journals 273 , 318 do not. . But they are much lighter and large amount of heavy metal would need to be used on the 273 318 crank to balance.

318's do not

A nice original steel forged crank is worth a good deal to some if you want it. I bought one 2 years ago ,original 340 steel crank and was fresh from machine shop , for around $350 , but its what I was wanting so I paid up for something I wanted , and compared to a new price and China steel product its was worth it to me, ,With an original ,between family or friends and your for sure its a good crank $200 would not be a bad price , of course that depends on how close the family and what he thinks it is worth ?

But like you said fresh from the machine shop. Probably Cleaned. Magnafluxed and polished. What did that cost? Also could have been cut if undersize.

If its within driving distance Troy and a machine shop gives it a clean bill of health...$150-200?? There is value in it being a short distance away if it's good. I drove almost 11/2 hours for that NOS camshaft.

Getting a crank cut and checked in Canada is probably $300-$400 plus tax…so I would try keep the purchase price down…plus it might be junk…

Minus the cost for the work and what did the Crank actually cost. Around $50 ?
No closer to $225 , my machine shop on just a crankshaft job is around $125 for all the work without major issues ,,, Rod an main bearings were bought with rebuilt kit separately to match work done to block,

I agree, but not this one. I wouldn't take a chance on one with journal rust..............Went down that road before. It's been to the machine shop......Cleaned and polished. A couple of the journals are a tad out of spec according to the FSM. I could probably run it as is.
