Freakin' Horseshoe clip!!

I am soooo frustrated! Spent the last 45 minutes simply trying to re-use my existing horseshoe clip for the e-brake arm on the trailing shoe, since the new shoes didn't come with new ones. This is on a '68 cuda with 10 inch drums. No matter what I do or how careful I am, the clip just flops back off. I've got the wave washer in place but the clip just spreads and stays spread when you press it on. Do I need new clips? Can I even get just them? Gotta just walk away for a while. Arrgghhhh! :banghead:
 
Have you tried sliding it over the pin and squeezing the ends with a set of needle nose pliers?
 
I have always re-used the C-clips because, as you say, "not in the bag". You can buy them separate. The steel seems malleable and I never had trouble squeezing them on, but I don't recall a "wave washer" so maybe that gave me more clearance on the groove. My 1965 has 10" brakes. I should look close at the FSM parts or maybe they added that later.
 
Do you have a helper, have one person hold the clip in place, squeeze the end with vice grips, done.
Also, I have found it is easier to change these on the work bench instead of on the car.
 
Yeah those are soft steel and will not spring. I always use vice grips on those.
 
Yea! I got the lil' motherbear on. Two screwdrivers in one hand, chopstick like, and needle nose in the other. BUT, now I'm not sure it's right! Does the wave washer go between the horseshoe clip and the shoe web, or between the e-brake arm and the shoe web? Found it done the other way on the other side, so now I don't know which is correct. I also found 2 different styles of adjuster arm and springs in the right places but wrong order. Stuck until someone can tell me where the wave washer goes. Thanks fellas.

ETA: The '69 manual says to install the parking brake lever and "secure with wave washer and horseshoe clip". I'm pretty sure that means the clip and washer are next to each other. This is my first time into the rears on this car so I can only conclude the last person who worked on 'em was a boob:wack:
 
I keep spare ones in my tool box when i don't use them....
