Thinking a freshstart in the engine for my Duster might be in order.

After a years worth of work and every case of bad luck I'm to the point where I wouldn't cry if it cratered tomorrow.

My latest thoughts are to pull the 340 from storage and have it built and try again. But If I end up doing that I'm not sure if I should go stock or not.

I have no luck with anything aftermarket. Even my TTI's hit.

So out of curiosity how fast/hor much can be expected out of a 340 built with nice internals and lots of care and a cam that will handle iron hi-flow exhaust manifolds?

You can have a nice mid 13 car with that engine. You want faster?
Mid to high 12's can still be good for driving around while not looking like a race ride.

I've recently dug up my Mopar Muscle 340 Dyno Derby magazine article. How realistic is their 391hp out of a stock 340 with cam, intake, carb and hedders?

I remember that issue. I can read it later. But, to be honest, there dyno will probably read different than the one you test on. Also, is theres a generous or stingy dyno and in what catogorey. More for HP? More for torque? Is it dead on?

It seems a bit stout for a stock cam. Take it with a grain of salt. If you do it, folow it to the tea and run it at the track. You can do the math from there and come up with a decently good est. of power.

A 71 340 duster with a 3.91 - 4.10 gear, a decent convertor, headers and a good exhaust system and drag radials should be able to run mid to high 13's. With a correctly assembled stock 340. A good intake and even a small cam should get you 13.0's. Keep it simple, it'll amaze you.

Simple is my plan more proven and tested set-ups with good manners.

I don't want to build a brick but at the same time a street car that can run low 13's should be more then enough to keep me entertained.

Another idea I was given is a 340 with 360 crank.... Like the idea of a stroker but never had/driven one either.
