What all can I do with the front end while the engine is out? It certainly would be easier, as far as access, but It dawned on me that maybe the engine has to be installed, in order to establish ride height, to be able to do front end alignment, bushings, replace torsion bars, etc(?)

Suspension needs to be loaded before tightening the control arm pivots, setting ride height, and alignment. No reason you can't R&R everything while the engine is out though.

I'm planning on replacing everything while my motor is out. Figur that I'm going to need another alignment due to the weight change from a /6 to a BB anyway so might as well change everything so I know it's new and fresh.

You can disassemble and rebuild the whole thing. Mark the cams and mark the tie rods. You should be able to get the alignment back good enough to drive it to the alignment rack. Performance Suspension Technology had rebuild kits bacjk when I did mine, which was ten years or more ago. they had polyurethane bushing kits if that's the route you want to take. I do remember the kit didn't have certain parts like pitman arm, inner tie rods etc. It was still a good deal on a front end rebuild kit though.
