Does anyone know if a gas tank can be reconditioned to look new? If it is possible how is it done? My tank is in good shape with some minor surface rust and undercoating. I was hoping to remove the undercoating, sand off the rust, boil out the tank and re-plate or paint the tank to look new. If it can be done for a reasonable cost I can avoid buying a new one.

Thanks

I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you are the original owner and meticulously maintained it, an old tank is gonna have rust in it that is diffucult to remove and prevent from returning. There's cleaning and sealant kits you can buy for the inside and most radiator shops will boil it out for you. But the results are not always good. You can get a new one for not much more after you're done with all that time, money and effort. Paint it, install it, keep it full and never worry about it again.

Thanks for the advice. What do you recommend painting the new tank with to match the original factory finish?
