I'm taking the pig unit off of the 8 3/4 rear end thats in my 340 Dart.... I'm looking for a new set of gears with a posi unit.... what gear ratio should I go with? 3.55? 3.23? 3.91? any others? I'm just looking for opinions and some feedback. My car is a stock 69 Dart 340 3-speed with modified axels to run 265 tires in the rear.

Thanks

I currently run 3.23 behind a 904/360 combo. The 3.23 let's me get out on the freeway and cruise at 65-75 without revving too high but, It also falls short on pinning you in the seat type of driving. I am thinking about swapping to a 3.55 just to get a little more bottom end. The perfect match to me would be a 3.91 with an overdrive, right now that's out of my budget.

Ya I hear the 3.91 is a popular choice.... how is overdrive installed?

Pernzee, first you must determine how you will be using the car. If its a street/strip, 3.55-3.91 is a good zone. Heavy highway cruiser, 2.76-3.23. Track only, 4.10-5.17. Below are different ratios. Whats in it now? Mike

2.76, 2.93, 3.23, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 3.91, 4.10, 4.56, 4.89, 5.17,

5.57.

With that short tire if all you do is cruise around I would stick with 3.55s

It has a 3.23 in it right now.... the car is just going to be used for cruisin around town, very little highway use.... I figured I'll stay in the 3.55-3.91 range, now its just a matter of finding a good gear set with posi for a decent price.... I like the idea of putting overdrive on the car, but I got no idea what is involved to do that?

A setup in a "741" housing will be your best bet as far as dollar value. Most guys don't want them because they are the smallest of the three (741, 742, 489) but for a street car it will be way more than adequate as far as strength.

Chuck

I got a 741 set up with 3.23s for the street. And a 742 set up
with 4.30s for the strip. I can swap them out in about an hour
and a half. With the green bearings on the axles.
