Well, as some of you may know, I sold my 1972 Dart recently to pay for a lawyer to get some custody and visitation of my daughter. I had a little extra left over, so I decided to look for another toy...
I know its not an a-body, but after 16 years I want to try something different. I posted a thread recently about building an older truck, and I found one near me already! It is a 1957 Dodge stepside, no eng/trans. I have to go look at it, but I'm pretty sure for the price that I'm already going to buy it.
Have any of you ever built an older Dodge such as this one? I still have the Indy cnc headed 422 roller cammed stroker, and my 904 trans. I'll be selling EVERYTHING else that I don't need, lots of a-body stuff that I have to dig out and go through.
My plans include finding out how to put an IFS (independent front suspension) on it in a decent budget, I just don't like the thought of that much horsepower and that kind of steering/brakes mixed together. I'll upgrade the brakes, etc. Not sure what kind of wheels/tires yet, but it will have fairly wide rear tires. Gotta find out how guys make trucks hook up...
Hopefully I can pick it up this week, I don't have a trailer and its an hour away so I guess its time for me to call anyone I know and make some offers to haul it for me.
I'll be using a few a body parts on it, like my 65' cuda bucket seats. I want to keep it all mopar, and the rear will more than likely be a 3.54 or 3.73 geared dana 60.
I'm going to do all of this on a budget, I know it doesn't sound very budget minded but believe it or not I have less than 5K in my engine, and it is a 70' 340 with bushed lifter bores, align bored with girdle and studs, decks parallel cut, bored and plate honed, forged 4" crank, eagle h-beams, je pistons, balanced, fluidamper, moroso deep pan, crane mech roller 260/[email protected] .672/.672 with 1.6 rockers (don't have the rockers yet) crane roller lifters, cloyes tru-roller, Indy cnc 245 heads, and MP aluminum valve covers. I don't think that is a bad price...I do some serious shopping and trading! lol
Anyway, I'd just like to hear some input, ideas, etc. Good or bad. I know its not an a-body, but this is my favorite website, and really, the only people that I can talk cars to anymore. So, tell me what you think!
