So after several years of obsessively looking at trucks wishing I had one, I was finally able to get one - a '76 D100 Custom short bed with a 400 and 4 speed! I love '70s Dodge trucks, I really do. Something about them just speaks to me. Bought this one out of Oregon, had it shipped out here, got it about a week and half ago. I hope to use it as a tow rig for the Duster if I ever finish the engine.

About 10-12 years ago when I lived in NYC, I had a purple '72 W100 shorty with a 360 and a 4 speed. I sold it in 06 and always regretted it. So I'm back in a truck after almost 10 years.

This truck needs some work for sure but its a good driver. It's about 95% rust free save for a spot on the pass. side cab upper door frame where an antenna was clipped. There are dents and dings on every panel and the dark green paint is pretty much shot. It's also got a rear roll pan and a straight, working tailgate. Has cop wheels and dog dish caps.

Interior is passable but could also use some work. It's a bare bones truck which is right in my wheelhouse.

When I first got it, I had to fix a pinhole leak in the radiator. Got that fixed and put new hoses on. The original overflow tank was leaking so I had to replace that with a generic one I had on the shelf.

The 400 came with a Holley 750 vacuum secondary. It had a bad stumble/sputter around 2,000 rpm. Rather than trying to tune it, I took the easy way out and switched it for my old double pumper. The stumble went away but the DP was too much carb. So off came the DP and on went a 6139 TQ I've had sitting on the shelf for years. Took some tuning but its running OK. Only area that still needs work is matting the gas from a roll. Put some new plugs and wires on as well and advanced the timing a few degrees.

I drove it back and forth to work yesterday (110 mi round trip through NYC traffic), all went well. Temp never went over 180, even in 1 mph stop and go traffic. Oil pressure was normal. Working the clutch on the NP 435 every 10 seconds got a little tiring and the brakes suck but overall I was pretty happy with how it performed. Handled well and was fun to drive.

Here's some pics!

Cool truck! I bet that's torquey.

Reminds me of the trucks we had in the Air Force back in the day.

Loved driving them.

Nice , wish I still had my 77 ramcharger ! Great trucks

Thanks for the compliments.

I see a few older trucks around here now and again but they're either restored or rusted up to the belt line. I know of two '70s Power Wagons in my town but they are sitting behind a guys garage and have not moved in a LONG time. Gotta look out west for old cars these days.

It's torquey for sure, it's a big block with an NP435! 1st gear is uselss, I start in 2nd. Doesn't feel like a car would with this combo but when I leave a stop light and glance in the rear view mirror, the cars are WAAAY back there.

My 75 F250 has a Borg Warner T-18. It's similar to the NP 435, but I use first gear. I didn't at first, but I like rowin gears.

I bought my 95 3500 new and love it, but like you, I love the earlier models and miss having one!!!!! that's a great truck you found!!!!!

Cops wheels and doggies! Roll pan! Color me jealous, that's quite a sweet ride.

The early shorties are getting really hard to find in good condition, as you know. Looks like you scored big.

Congrats. :thumrigh:

How many times did you stop for gas on that trip? Sounds like a fun truck.

I had it transported. I'm married and have two kids. That sure would be a perfect world if I were able to pull that maneuver off without long term repercussions.

Just for fun, let's just imagine that conversation with my wife..

"Hey, I just bought an old beater truck out in Oregon to use as another toy/project. I'm gonna fly out there and drive it back. See ya in two weeks".

Right.

Fuel economy is on my mind though. I would like to do an EFI setup before long. And overdrive. And A/C. And.... well you get the idea.

That's a cool truck! Nice score.

Factory 400 4 speed?

Cool.

My 1980 has a factory 833 O/D behind a transplanted 1969 440.

I do use first but I ain't in it long.

You can start in second if you want, but you spend a LOT of time in second.

It's basically idling in 4th (O/D) at 45 MPH.

It's not a factory 400, it was a 318. However, it was converted using all factory stuff.

I'm going to put an OD trans in it, no doubt in my mind. I have an an aluminum case 833 od on the shelf that needs to be gone through. From what I've read, it will need to have a case bushing installed. No biggie if it's apart.

The tough part is finding the #670 bell housing that fit big blocks and have the dual bolt pattern for the NP435/833. They are around but pricey.

I would like to be able to use first, it's a better gear split than just the three speeds. It would help coming off idle. Passon makes a 5 speed cluster gear with od I could put in. I might do that. The truck has a 3.23 gear so highway cruise rpm is not too bad but a little more gear would be good for the overall combo, maybe a 3.55.

The truck looks good. That granny gear will be good when towing the Duster and all the oh-oh spare parts to the track. Keep thinking about that rear ratio since .69 is the O.D. Ratio correct?

4.10 X .69 = 2.8290 (2.83)
3.91 X .69 = 2.6979 (2.70)
3.55 X .69 = 2.4495 (2.45)
3.23 X .69 = 2.2287 (2.23)
