Headed to Costco to get a battery tonight. I can choose from Group 24 or 27. I'd rather have 27, but either should work. Will a 27 fit in the stock tray?

A group 27 will not fit in a group 24 tray. The tray is easy to change though.

Damn... I keep leaving that out. 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger 340. Costco/Interstate list a 24 as standard and a 27 as optional.

I will measure it before I head that way. I should be able to figure out if it will fit just by measuring. I have the battery footprint dimensions.

Just the stock battery tray. Is there more than one size?
Year model and engine.

Measure your tray and see what fits. The battery numbers now days are not as simple as they once were. I just put a new one in my 66 along with a dress up kit. The Wally World Never Start had exposed caps so the kit worked well. You can see the group 24 in my tray. Not much room left over.

The group 27 is a way bigger battery than a 24. No way is it fittin in a 24 specific tray. The 27 is for Toyota SUV applications.

Its listed as optional equipment in the service manual.

Once more. A group 27 will NOT fit in a group 24 tray. I don't care what's written in the manual. The 27 is over 2" longer. Ain't happenin, UNLESS it has a 27 size tray, which I've never seen.

From 1967-1974 there were three different battery trays
67-69 2768366
70-71 3404432
72-74 3642334
For those years there was only one number listed each year.
So if there was a different tray it wasn't listed in the parts book.

I'd be interested in what literature shows it as an option in the 69 Dart

A lot of the big box stores show different options, often times that are WAY wrong, such as a 27 going where a 24 fits. Some are legitimate, but others are way out in left field.

Juz' sayin Rob and I'm sure you know this. 27 was around long before Toyota hit the US. The thing is, there are some AWESOME batteries in 24. I'm not sure why the OP thinks this is such a big deal, and especially with modern PM starters

Yep. My group 24 was 720 cca. Plenty of power to spin my 273 over with the Dakota starter.

Oh yeah.....Toyotees was just the first thing that popped into my head they fit.

Interstate battery website has sizes on their website - MT34 is close and a little more power, but as with all info on the internet there could be a mistake. I actually have an interstate battery store near me, told them what I had and what I was looking for when I replaced my Mustang one last year and they got me what I wanted - you should be able to get something to meet your needs, 27 group most likely wont be it though.

I got a 24 today at Costco. Fits fine. I asked about the 27 because it was stronger and a bit cheaper. The 24 will work fine..
