I am rebuilding my 340 and am wondering if the original harmonic balancer can be rebuilt. After 35 years the rubber between the metal discs looks a little tired. Has anyone had one rebuilt or for insurance do people generally replace them? Is there any danger in leaving the original balancer on the fresh engine for many years to come?

i would replace it just because then i will feel alot more comfortable when setting ignition timing.

with a bad balancer, aside from not being able to tell where your ignition timing is at, they cannot function if the rubber is fractured, or doesnt fit as tight as designed. The harmonics it dampens can ruin bearings, and lead to crank and/or rod problems in your engine. If it were me, I would replace it. Find an NOS one if it's financially worth while, or buy a new current design.
