pushed the button on the bottom of the head light switch on my 1970 duster and removed the pull nob/shaft.
now the shaft will not stay in or turn on the lights
it just slides right out
is it broken beyond repair ?

Push button probably just stiffened up. You can get new HL switches from parts store, they were the same for decades.

If you were pushing the button to put the stem back again you my have damaged to lock. The lock is sort of like keyhole shaped. The tapered point of the stem should guide it into the lock without button pushed. With no stem in place, the button can push too far. The stem will hit the far side of the lock and bend it.

Also don't forget that it is a triangle, and it needs to line up as such while pushing in
