Hey guys. I have a 5.2l Magnum in my barracuda and I plan on building an LA 318 with the Magnum heads in the near future. I'm weird like that. Anybody know who makes a decent set of headers that will fit the Magnum exhaust ports as well as an A-body chassis? I'm not trying to buy TTI or some custom made, high dollar pieces(no money for that kinda stuff).

Any of them will fit.

Normal la headers work fine on Magnum heads. If on a budget, check out Hooker Competition,or Hedman"tight tubes".

Ok. I just had to ask because I had a "reputable" engine builder argue with me about the Magnum exhaust ports being different from LA exhaust ports. It didn't make sense to me, but better safe then sorry.

I tried a lot of the alternatives, and was really only happy with the Doug's for my Magnum swap.

Is your car Power Steering? That might affect what you can use.

Yes, it is P/S. Is the clearance issue with the steering column or rack?

As far as fit and finish TTI and Doug's seems to be the best. Any A body small block header will fit. Summit sells em dirt cheap.

Ya I was just looking at the summit brand long tubes. They are almost giving them away for that price. I talked to their tech guys and they said I MIGHT(read-will) have a clearance issue with the steering box. Has anybody had this problem with cheaper headers, like hooker competition ones?

LA heads have the same exhaust ports as a magnum, anyone who arugues with you is ignorant to the fact, 273 manifolds or headers won't work as later LA 318's and all magnums have polution ports under the main exhaust ports

The hell they do. I got two sets of magnums right now that have no air injection ports.

I got Hooker comp. headers on my car now with power steering and it clears the box but just barely. The pass. side also just clears the torsion bar. I had to do some tweaking to get them to where they didn't rattle on something. I've heard of other guy say they had to actually ding some tubes in to get them to clear. As for the ports, I don't know where that got started unless it's because the center ports on magnum heads have a little thicker divider. The ports are still in the same place, just smaller than LA heads. And no magnums had smog ports.

BTW: if you ain't a cussin man you might be after you install them headers. I'm pulling mine off and tossing them. Tired of working around them and dragging them on speed bumps. Got a new set of Doug's going on in a week or 2.

I was sure they had air injection ports.... well thats even better because 273 and 340 manifolds will fit!:blob: must be the LA 302 castings I'm thinking of

Yeah they sure will.

I heard it was only the EARLY (90s?) magnums that had the smog ports.
Here is my 'new' 01 5.2 magnum on the stand with the original 273 manifolds on them.

It's now in the car and running great! but now I'm wishing I knew about those headers...

Absolutely no magnum heads ever had smog ports. Early or late. I bought a brand new Dakota in 93 and it didn't have smog ports. A buddy of mine had a 92 Ram with a 318 mag (1st year for the magnum) and it didn't have smog ports. Your engine looks super.

That's what I was thinkin...but I am unfamiliar with magnum engines. These will be the first magnum heads I have ever run.
