i have a chance to buy some( 4 sets) heads and wondering what you think. it looks like 2 sets are j heads and wondering if you think they are worth taking a look at in person and what you think they might be worth as a rebuild able sets or maybe i put a few $ into them and sell like that.

I know i would take a chance they ended up cracked or warped beyond repair. thanks in advance

Intake valves being pounded into the head is the biggest issue I've seen, especially the factor 2.02 heads.

not sure i understand.

the valves would likely be replaced in a rebuild anyway right so if they were damaged it would not matter a whole bunch

So does anybody think these would be worth picking up at a decent price and what do you think it is a reasonable price for a set of heads that you don't know a lot about

What are the casting numbers? 73 up heads tend to crack, almost 50% Newer heads like 308 and 302 crack with an even higher percentage. I would hate to tell you how many I have scrapped. J heads should be good. Rotator retainers are from trucks and have a shorter valve spring installed height. Plan on replacing exhaust valves on all unless you get real lucky. Red valve springs with damper are OEM 340 and will probably check out as good. Look for bad core shift. I'm too far out of buying stuff so can't give you prices. Just things to keep in mind when buying used heads.

Thank you for the information and reply

I really don't need any just thought if they can be had for a decent price it might be worth it it looks like there's a couple sets of J heads there anyway

I'd hate to tell anyone how many sets I have. If you can get them cheap enough, J's are very nice to have.

Ask to have proof of them not being cracked.
There worth isnt much. You may very well put more info the head than you can resell it for. It is possible.

From a performance stand point, iron heads are OK. They can be ported out very well. The issue comes in vs. Edelbrock heads via there performance ceiling and cost. Iron heads can be cost effective for a limited ceiling vs. tending to OOTB Edelbrock heads and there OOTB performance which may not be realized or maximized.

It basically comes down to choosing the right shoe for the walk or run.

I can't sell complete core J heads for 125/pr

If they are free and you want the hassle of storring/shipping etc., have at it.

Like I said I really have no use for them at all I have a couple sets already advised to seek any kind of money into heads it would be a set up already assembled aluminum heads.

Obviously the guys knocking to give me any kind of guarantee they're not cracked I can probably buy them pretty cheap per set it will be an as is where is type of deal.

There would be no shipping involved because I could pick them up local and I have plenty of room to store them but I'm probably going to pass just because I don't really need them sitting around for no reason. I guess I can talk them really cheap there probably worth their weight in scrap LOL.

I sold my last set for $75.00 and was glad
to unload them.
