Hello,
Pulled the cam out of the motor today to see what I had.It is a 268 Comp cam.It looks as though the guy who built the motor was building a mild street 360.Not sure of the compression.9:1-10:1 ?

Here is what I have so far.
360 block .30 over
Looks like some keith Black flat top pistons.
268/454 Comp cam
2500 B&M Stall
2.50 dual exhaust with "H"-pipe
235/60/14 BFG's
273 gear
Auto trans

Thinking of:
Ede Air-Gap
750 Holley or Ede

This cam likes a 3.23-3.55 gear
and is made for 10:1 compression ratio or less.

Question:How am I looking so far?
Any suggestions?
Go bigger on the cam?

I know there are some blanks left out but any suggestions would be apreciated for a nice little street motor.

Thanks
John

check the valve springs, u mite need to upgrade. also if u can fit bigger tires or maybe switch to street slicks, that is if ur going for the strip/street car. another thing, check the tranny and if it doesnt have a shift kit, get one. thats what i'd do if i were in ur shoes

I don't know what your shooting for, but in general, it looks like a fun engine. I know I'd do a larger cam and gear set with the intake and carb you list.

Thanks rumble,
Here is my dilema.
I do not know what valve springs are in the head.Obviously they are set-up for the comp 268/454 cam,and they are new.

Would I be able to go to the Comp XE 268 or XE 274 without touching the springs?

I would think anything under 500 lift I would be ok,and both of them are.

I have heard good things about the XE 268 / XE 274.
Would these be a better choice?

Thanks

I'd pull one of the valve springs and take it to a shop and have them measure the spring pressure at closed and open around .500 " lift, see what the numbers come back as and go from there. Or look up the specs for the recommended spring with the 268 cam. You need to know what you have before starting any changes.

I'd be willing to bet these are single springs with a damper right ? Most all of these springs are good to no more than .500" lift. I dont know what the lift range is on the extreme cams, take a look at the spring specs used for their cam applications and compare what you have - I'll bet you are fine.

The XE 268 has a max lift of .480
The XE 274 has a max lift of .491

The XE268-Great for street machines.Largest cam for stock converter.
The XE 274-Very strong torque and throttle response.2,200+ stall

Found out the recomended spring for the 268/454 is the same as the XE268/480.Comp 901-16.

Anybody running the XE268 ?

Is it even worth the change.

Thanks guys.
John

Is it worth it?

In a bang for the buck on where you stand now, no, not really.

though you would pick up power, it isn't like there would be a huge gain with it and what you have now and intend to run isn't to small for what you want to do and add.

What I would do is just add the intake carb and get some gear. It'll be a nice street car.

Although my flavor would be a bigger cam and steep gears, thats me. I'm demanding and abusive. If it doesn't perform, it dies trying. I hate slow cars that can not get out of it's own way.

If my next car runs low 14's, I'm not disapointed. They just need to jump when I say jump and ask how high on the way up.
Of course I don't say 50ft. high to a car that can only jump 15ft. but it better jump 15 when I say jump!

Thanks Rumble/Doug/66Dart

I think you sold me on what I have.

I wish I knew the exact specs on the motor. However I know the motor was built with the best parts and by a reputible engine builder. With all the new parts I have in the box,and the built 904 tranny I got,it sounds like everything was well planned out.

Should be a nice street set-up.

Thanks again for all your help !!!

JD

Enjoy!!!!!!!! Watch out for the cops.

I'd keep it. I've run both, and I like them both. But the XE268 tames things in terms of the idle. The 268H will have a little romp to it.

Copy that Rumble,watching for cops.:burnout:

Thanks Moper........Ya sold me !!!!!!

Hey Johnny,
I'm in the same boat with my engine. Built with good parts and reputable builder. It's a comp 292. I've been thinking of going with the xe268 or the xe274. But, I too have been persuaded to just go ahead and run with what I've got for now because I have steep gears and a 5-speed. I can always change the cam out if I want and it won't be too expensive to do. That's how I figured it since my engine was already broken in. I changed a few other things though. Sucks not knowing what to expect out of something you didn't build yourself.

I bet you'll be happy with that cam. Although I get the impression you like a nice idle and crisp throttle response. I bet it will be tough with the 2.73 gears. I forgot...did yo u change to a 8 1/4 or 8 3/4 yet?

Romp away.........if you need extra hands give me a shout when you drop that sucker in. Funny you couldn't leave that 318 in there. HAHA

Hey Dave,
The 70 has a 8.75 already in it,with stock 273? gears.
I have a extra 8.75 at the house.Eventually I will build that with a 3.55 suregrip.....With my motor I got a built 904 with a brand new 2500 B&M stall.

It is kind of a crap shoot but dam it is fun !!!!!!!!!
