1971 Scamp slant six. automatic, gear selector on the column, So, I was adjusting the valves, had the engine warmed up etc, and using the remote starter method of turning the engine over.

Rewind to 30 min before, I came out of work and it wouldnt start.

Did the key thing a few times, heard the little twong noise of what i assume is the solenoid engaging, nothing.

so i look under the hood, nothing seems amiss, wiggle some cables to make sure the are tight, try again, it starts.

Drive home 2 miles, park, turn key off, go get tools, start car up to warm it up again.

Take the valve cover off to start the job, halfway through i believe it has cooled too much so i start it again, let it run, then finish.

So i try starting it again, nothing but the little twong sound. Its dark by now cant see much.

So I check spark, it has spark. It has gas, none of which really dont matter as it doesnt crank.

Wondering where the Nuetral safety switch is.

Does anyone know if it is on the column or on the trans?

i assume its not the starter or the relay as i can hear the relay when i turn the key, and the start crakns when i use the remote swith to the solenoid

any ideas

No one? Not even where the Switch may be? Its dark outside so i cant go look

Yes it is in the trans. I beleive it is a 3 prong screw in unit. The 727 and 904 use the same switch.

May be I should of told you where it is. It's above and to the rear of the shift linkage on the drivers side on the trans. It will have a connetor on it

A way to check to make sure is if you ground the G terminal on the relay and you have no issues then I would suspect the NSS.

When you talk about jumping the terminal, are you talking about grounding the wire, or the actual terminal to ground?

I took the G terminal wire off and attached a jumper to the terminal itself.

Turned the key, but still nothing, i then tried the remote starter with the key on, and it started.

UMMM Ignition switch or Nuetral saftey switch??

If your nss is bad you should be able to start it in neutral.

If you have terminal G going to ground and it still isn't starting then either the switch or the relay is bad. Are you getting power to the I terminal when trying to crank. If so then bad relay if not then bad switch or wiring from the switch to the relay.

Starter relay. If the NSS was bad, you wouldnt hear the "twong" which is the relay moving but not passing current. If the solenoid was getting flaky, it wouldn't work by jumping the relay.

Thanks Chief, I took the day off to mess with it. I think it may be the relay or the igintion switch.

I jumped the NSS, and it still had the issue sometimes, other times it will start with the key.

I plugged the NSS back in and it started, both with the key and remote starter.

Its kind of erratic. The ignition switch was replaced by the previous owner, The relay looks kind of old.

probably try to replace the relay soon and see what happens. My remote starter and i will become good friends possibly.

Your solenoid could be getting flaky as well, try giving it a bit of "discipline" with a few whacks with a mallet. If thr relay clicks, everything upstream works...
