I have a general question on my intake and carb heat. I've recently notice that when I shut my motor off the intake and carb a very hot. It's a big block and has a Edelbrock aluminum intake and edelbrock carb. I know some people put insulation between the valley pan and intake, do you suggest doing this? should I be using a carb spacer?

Your aluminum intake dissipates heat much faster than the cast iron heads and block, so it`s going to act as a heat sink. Does your valley pan have the heat riser blocked off?If not you may change the pan gasket, that might help in reducing the initial temperature the manifold reaches, but it does affect the choke and warm up/cold driving issues.I don`t see where insulation will do a lot of good, an air gap is the best thing you can have to help the engine dissipate heat. Heat is going to rise ,and unless you can change nature your intake will always be hot.

I didn't think the insulation would do any good. The valley pan I used actually was the one with block off for the heat crossover, but someone had actually drilled 1/2 " holes in it. I should have just ordered a new one that had the block off, but I was to anxious to drive the car so I reused the one I had. I think I will order a new valley pan. The problem is the intake is getting so hot when I shut it off the fuel is boiling out and I have to crank the motor over for a while before it fires.

I`ve heard that will happen sometime. Some people suggest (for street use) that a hole should be drilled in the heat riser port but much smaller. Something like 1/8 of an inch, just so that the choke will operate closer to normal. FelPro makes a gasket kit, I believe the # is 1215, that has the valley pan which is blocked off and 2 pairs of paper gaskets that sandwich the pan. The paper will help minimize heat transfer from the heads and help insure a tight seal. You might give it a try.

I would be useing a carb spacer. OR The factory used a *I think* 3/8 gasket of a woven material under the AVS carbs and are available new. I got one in my rebuild kit. The factory realized the heat problem early on.
