I have an AZ 64 Dart 170 I just picked up and I was wondering how I can tell which engine it has.

The guy I picked it up from was not a car guy so I don't know if becaause it was a 170 car he may have assumed that it had that engine. I haven't driven it yet so I don't how well it performs. Runs smooth though.

Thanks,
Mike

Look at the water pump bypass hose under the thermostat housing area at the front of the head. If it is a 170, the hose will be very short. If it is a 225, the hose will be longer, mayne 3.5-4" as opposed to 2.5-3". Of course, if it has the long hose, it could also be a 198. Although the 198 would not have come in the car, it is certainly old enough to have had one swapped in. To be for sho and for certain, get the casting number off the driver's side of the block.

The block will be stamped (unless it was milled off in a previous rebuild) on the RF top of the block by the coil/alternator bracket. If original '64, it will be stamped V225 or V22 if it's a 225 engine or V170 or V17 if it's a 170. If there is different letter code before the engine size, it's from a different year. There are also date codes on the blocks that will show when the block was cast.
