You look to have the wrong ones. There are shallow ones like what you have and deeper ones like what you need.

I found out the hard way years ago.
If I remember correctly my 71 had the deep ones and a 72 I parted back then had shallow ones. No idea if it went by year or what.

Darn, never would have guessed. Thank you, I'll be on the lookout for deeper ones.
The 70-71 chrome trim has 3 mounting holes & looks like this...
