How fast are big block Duster's.

Being the owner of many a 3500 lb GM cars, i dont think i full appreciate the duster i am building yet. I understand its all about HP to weight ratio, and how well you can get the car to accelerate, get power to the ground. I have seen a few you tube videos of a nice 340 duster, nothing too fancy by the looks of things clicking off 11.55 @ 116 mph. I think to myself thats pretty stout, might be a stroker in disguise?

I took my car complete to the scales before i tore it apart, and in full trim bench seats and all, with a 6 cylinder and a half tank of fuel was 2770 lbs without me in it. I thought holy **** thats a dream. So add in an 8-3/4 with 727, there has to be some weight there, and with all the aluminum on the big block, that saved 125 lbs plus glass lift off hood another 35 lbs. I think the car should be the same weight now as a small block duster?

So with 525 hp, 552 tq on the dyno, with 3500 stall and 3.73 gears, is it possible to be into the 11,s with this car?
 
hell yea, there's something F-ed up if it doesn't - maybe a little shallow on the gears but it should..
 
My heavier cuda with a heavy driver has run 11.50's on 3.55 gears through full exhaust. The engine originally dyno'd at 550 HP and 610 TQ, and since I have upgraded the cylinder heads, which I figure netted me another 25 HP. I think you'll be right in there.

Ok great thank you for the replies. I have 10 position adjustable shocks on all 4 corners too so some adjustability in the car. Also Afco leafs and 340 torsion bars up front.

-- Yep !! - My guess is around mid 11s, if it hooks-up.
 
I'd have to validate the scale if it said a duster weighed only 2770lbs! I've yet to see a stock duster less than 3000lbs!
 
That was with a slant 6 as well. I figure the car will be 3300-3400 with me in it and fuel.

You should have no problem hitting 11's with that. I get about 550 hp out of my motor and hit the time shown in my sig. It's about a 3200 lb car.
 
My 69 Valiant with a 400 low deck - 727 - dana 60 weighed in at 3240 pounds with no one inside
 
If we say your car at the line will be 3000lbs and you have a genuine 525fly hp, and it can hook and run a good 60ft in the high 1.4's.(doubtful with 3.7's and a 3500 conv).....in theory that p/w can push you to 10.50's@128. If your chassis is not up to it however it should still go mid to low 11's I would've thought. If it was a race car only with a good rearend set up I would put 4.56's in it, a 4500 verter and 28>30" tall slicks on it, then you would be in the 10.50's.

To give you an idea, my 1969 440 pictured left, went 10.7@126 with only 484 fly hp....n/a
 
Its a street car first. I want to be able to drive it daily without a lot of grief. I am actually only hoping for low 12's if it gets in the 11's i will have reached my goals.
 
Even with a marginal suspension, good slicks should get you there.....

Yes actual dyno power in the room that day was 525 hp and 552 tq.


Torque curve starts at 2900 rpm with 516 tq peak torque is at 4000-4600 at 552 then starts to decline slightly. by 5600 its is still holding 502 tq.

Even a pretty mild built should get you close. I have an old 280/480 hyd cam with 452 iron heads with only port match and slight pocket cleanup with 0.060 over heavy flat tops in a 75 with the heavy bumper(s) and it altitude corrects to 11.80s with stock springs & a snubber.
 
It would not surprise me one bit to see that car in the tens.
