Just ran into a guy that has put 273,000 miles on a 73 Kawi 900(?) 4 rerings with low tension comp. Rings still on a std. Bore! That seems like record territory...says it time for the 5th rering.....

A fellow co-workers BMW has over that without being a part as far as I know. Like all engines really, treat them right with fresh often changed fluids and without beat downs.

I only logged 40+ K on my '03 Sportster in 5 years without issue. But that's just getting started as far as I'm concerned.

The liquid cooled, shaft drive, boxer style engines are designed for longevity, like the BMW and Goldwings. Air cooled engines not as much.

The older Goldwings it was recommended that the valves be adjusted at each 100,000 and they would turn multiple hundred thousands of miles.
No rerings either.
Oil changes, tires, brake pads and timing belt were the only needed maint in hundreds of thousands of miles.

A quote off the GL website,

Would be interesting to hear from someone that has rebuilt a Goldwing engine because it was worn out. Not talking about broken, ran hot, wrecked, submerged, but just plain worn out. You know - would not pass a leakdown test, oil out the valves, no compression, rattling bearings. I have never seen one that was worn out - and the most mileage I have seen on one was an 1100 with 445K miles on it, still looking good and running just fine.
