The setting:

1973, in a small town in North Alabama.

The story:

My parents, who were car buffs, were coming out of a '71 Datsun 510 and looking for something with V8 power for a change "for my mother". There was already a '68 Vette and a '64 Beetle in the stable, so economy and performance bases were covered.

First stop was the local Plymouth dealer(which is long gone) to test drive a new 340 Duster with an automatic. Suffice to say, my mother and brother were thrilled with it, but my dad was not a Mopar guy, so he INSISTED they move on to the local Chevy dealer to drive a Camaro.

The Camaro they drove was a yellow Sport Coupe(not a Z-28...) with a 2bbl 350. Needless to say, it was a slug compared to the Duster, so it was driven back to the lot and everyone went home.

Fast forward about 3 hours...late afternoon, and there's a knock at the door. Why, it's the Chevy salesman, and look, he brought along that beautiful Camaro. There it is, right in the driveway so we can see how it will look when it's OURS.

You can guess which car we lived with for the next few years:pale:

I absolutely love the 70-73 Camaro body style.

They look nice, but that one would not run at all, even after he had the dealer convert it to a 4bbl. It also had a bad habit of breaking belts.

Oh there were some slugs, I know. There were also some really snappy ones too.
