I have a 70 Duster with a standard instrument cluster. It is out of the car right now and I would like to test the gauges before I reinstall it. The speedo I guess I can spin it with a drill, and the ammeter gauge I intend to bypass. How does one check the gas and temperature gauges?

Apply 12 volts DC to the correct wire terminal on the back of the cluster, that will then go through the IVR and to the two guage in the firm of about 5v DC ( pulsed DC for the purists) then on the correct terminals attach a resistor of between 10 to 70 ohms then to ground. You can get 1/2 watt resistors on eBay.

The nutted terminal closest to the IVR should have about 5v pulsed DC. The next one is the sender for the fuel, next is 5v DC next is temp sender.
The 5 pins in a row are the corsponding pins to the nutted terminals. The center pin is the 12v in. (IIRC) you could confirm that by removing the IVR and following the trace.

Wish I had a way to mark mark up photos on my phone
