I've got my engine out, and I want to mock up the radiator (I bought a real nice used aluminum one from Fishy68) So I will need to drill four holes in the core support. This will be much easier to do while the engine is out! I want to make sure of placement, primarily the height of the radiator.

If one was to lay a straight edge (2x4 ?) across the fenders and measure down, what is the distance to the center of the fan?

As far as left and right, I think the engine is supposed to be off center a little (?) So maybe a measurement from a known point (inner fender?) to the center of the fan.

If anybody could help me out with these measurements, it would be real helpful. The radiator has a shroud that I would like to not have to cut up!

Thanks

Mark

I don't have a Dart, but I would measure up from the support that sets under the radiator. If your holes are too low you'll never get the radiator in.

Bolt your radiator in on the drivers side. Then mark the passenger side and drill new holes. Then you need to open up the core support hole on the passenger side if it had a 22'' radiator in it from the factory.

That sounds pretty logical.

Just make sure that the bottom of the radiator doesn't hit the bottom of the radiator support....

Hey Mark, it's not a 70 Dart, but the engine bay/inner fender configuration "should" be the same.

17 5/8" from the center to the bend on the inner fender.

12" from center to straight edge across fenders.

Hope it helps.

Hmmm, well, I'm thinking there must be some differences in our cars inner fenders, Bruce. I took this picture to show how far off center your measurement (17 5/8") is on my car. FYI, I put a 'bit tip' at the center-line of the car, and the other one at the 17 5/8" mark. I'm pretty sure the engine is not going to be that far off center (?)

Anyone else have a tape measure handy? Perhaps you could simply provide the distance that the engine sits "off center" in the engine bay.

The 12 inch distance (measured from a straight edge down to center of fan pulley) seems about right, but I would like to confirm your reference point. I layed a 8' 2x2 across the fenders, which touched only on the outer edges of the fenders. Is that how you did it Bruce, aka BadSport?

Maybe this ^ would be a more accurate way to measure the height / centerline of the fan (?)

the passenger side inner fender changed starting in 72 and up. The later style is supposed to give easier access to the alternator on a slant six with the presence of a charcoal can.......so to be the same inner fender you need to measure a-body car 67-71.

I only know about the difference because I was going to replace an inner fender on a car one time and I had the different style from a parts car and when I noticed the difference I had to go and find another parts car with the same inner fender. They all weld up and function but if your like me then a difference like that will drive you up the wall and I would have to end up re-doing the whole car simply because of a small difference like that #-o
