I don't think wages/income have kept up with increased cost of living, that's what makes the difference IMO. In 1996 I made $10/hr, where today I make $24.65/hr. My paycheck doesn't go anywhere near as far as it used to.

Yes exactly instead of a 1 person working household it’s become both partners need to work to contribute financially.

I peaked at age 50, made my best money, and costs were fairly low. With all that cash, I helped my daughter get thru college for 3 years.
